High Schoolers Shine at MUNNAM 2024
The 12th annual Model United Nations Namibia (MUNNAM) Conference recently concluded, with high school learners from across the country taking center stage. Held at the United Nations (UN) House in Klein Windhoek, the two-day event focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
A Platform for Future Leaders
The conference provided a unique opportunity for learners to simulate a UN General Assembly session. Through engaging debates, resolutions, and diplomatic negotiations, participants honed their critical thinking, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.
Reflecting on the event, Charles Moore stated, “I was truly impressed by the outstanding display of diplomacy from our young delegates. It is clear that the Namibian youth are well poised to lead in the future. Listening to their ideas and perspectives inspires hope for a brighter tomorrow.”
Samuel Ocran, UNICEF Representative and Acting UN Resident Coordinator, emphasised the importance of youth engagement: “Youth are not just beneficiaries of the UN Agenda; they are essential partners in shaping a sustainable future. With their energy, creativity, and innovation, young people play a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
Recognizing Outstanding Achievement
Over two days from November 5 to 6, 2024, delegates successfully passed one resolution out of four tabled. Awards were presented by H.E. Charles Moore, British High Commissioner to Namibia, and Dr. Carlos Fernandez Garcia, Team Leader & Strategic Planner at the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office. Several learners were recognised for their exceptional contributions including:
- Best Delegation: Haiti
- Best Delegate: Johanna Shikongo (representing Australia)
- Best Speaker: Benjamin Oldenburg (representing India)
- Best School: Windhoek International School
Empowering the Next Generation
MUNNAM continues to inspire and empower young Namibians. By participating in this immersive experience, learners gain valuable insights into global issues and develop the skills needed to become future leaders.
About MUNNAM
The Model United Nations Namibia (MUNNAM) program is a flagship educational initiative of the United Nations Information Centre in Windhoek. Through MUNNAM, students learn about the UN, multilateralism, and diplomacy. The United Nations supports Model UN simulations by building and maintaining strong links between the UN and Model UN participants. It does this by sharing first-hand knowledge about the work of the UN at Model UN conferences; providing guidance with organizers to create accurate and authentic simulations; and encouraging Model UN clubs to take concrete action to support UN values and the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).
