Model United Nations (MUN) has emerged as a transformative experience for Namibian learners, offering a unique platform to engage with global issues, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate leadership qualities, according to three Namibian teachers. For teachers like Mr. Edward Shati, Mrs. Rachel Dedig, and Mrs. Daniela Prinz, MUN provides an invaluable opportunity to inspire and empower the next generation of global citizens.

Unleashing Potential Through MUN

The 2024 MUN was a resounding success, with learners from Hage G. Geingob High School, Eldorado Secondary School, and Deutsche Hoehere Privat Schule (DHPS) demonstrating exceptional skills and dedication. Teachers were particularly impressed by the range of abilities that learners developed during the conference. Mr. Shati observed that learners exhibited strong leadership, public speaking, and negotiation skills. Mrs. Dedig noted significant growth in critical thinking and research abilities, while Mrs. Prinz highlighted the learners’ capacity to present well-researched arguments with limited preparation.

A Lasting Impact

The impact of MUN on learners’ personal and academic growth is profound. Mr. Shati emphasized the experience’s role in building self-confidence and enhancing research and analytical skills. Mrs. Dedig observed improvements in discipline and academic performance, while Mrs. Prinz highlighted MUN’s contribution to learner development, making it a valuable extracurricular activity at her school.

To encourage wider participation, teachers have integrated MUN into their school programs. Mr. Shati incorporated it into the debate society and organized workshops, while Mrs. Dedig promoted it through the debate club. Mrs. Prinz integrated MUN into the political studies curriculum, offering a comprehensive approach to international relations and diplomacy.

A Bright Future

All three teachers expressed enthusiasm for continuing to support MUN. Mr. Shati described the experience as “transformative,” equipping learners with essential life skills. Mrs. Dedig emphasized the academic and personal benefits, while Mrs. Prinz highlighted the advantage it gives learners in university applications.

The Model UN conference serves as a vital platform for nurturing future leaders. By sharpening academic skills, broadening worldviews, and fostering essential life skills, MUN empowers young people to address the challenges of a globally interconnected world.
